Reply to messages in threads

In group chats, you can reply to messages in threads to keep content organised and discussions focused. This allows you to discuss specific topics without notifying uninvolved group members.

1. Start or reply to a thread

Mobile

  • Long press the message you want to reply to and select ‘Reply in Thread’, or tap the ‘xx replies’ section below the message for existing threads.
  • This will open the thread page.
  • Type your reply in the input box and send it.

Desktop

  • Hover over or right-click the message you want to reply to and select ‘Reply in Thread’, or click the ‘xx replies’ section below the message for existing threads.
  • This will open the thread side panel.
  • Type your reply in the input box and send it.

2. Follow/Unfollow a thread

By default, you’ll automatically follow threads you participate in or are mentioned in. Once followed, it will:

  • Trigger notifications if you haven’t muted the specific chat.
  • Count towards your unread message count.
  • Display a “Following” status on your thread page.
  • Include you in the thread follower count.
  • Appear in your “My Threads” and "Threads" label lists.

You can manually follow/unfollow a thread at any time from the specific thread, or unfollow a thread from the “My Threads” or "Threads" label list.

Follow/Unfollow from the specific thread

  • Open the thread.
  • Click the ‘...’ at the top-right corner.
  • Select 'Follow/Unfollow'.

3. Auto follow all new threads in a group

You can set it to automatically follow all new threads in a group chat to keep track of all discussions happening in the group. This will apply at the individual level and will not change your follow status for threads that already exist.

  • Open the chat details page of the group chat.
  • Toggle the ‘Auto Follow Threads’ setting on.

4. "My Threads" - View all followed threads in a group

You can view all your followed threads in a group chat under the 'My Threads' list, accessible via the ‘My threads’ icon in the chatroom title bar. Threads with the most recent replies will appear at the top.
The total number of unread thread replies will be shown on the 'My Threads' icon when there are unread replies in your followed threads. For muted chats, it will be replaced with a red dot.
