What is Archive Chat?
Is your chat list getting too crowded? Archive Chat lets you hide chats you don't need to see every day — without deleting them. Archived chats are tucked away in a dedicated Archived Chats section, keeping your main chat list clean and focused on what matters most.
How to Archive a Chat
You can archive any active chats — including 1-1 chats, group chats, announcement chats, and more. Here's how:
On iOS:
- From your main chat list: Swipe left on a chat and tap the Archive button (the rightmost button).
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle on Archive Chat (found below the Labels setting).
On Android:
- From your main chat list: Long-press on a chat and tap Archive Chat (above "Clear Chat").
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle on Archive Chat.
On Desktop:
- From your main chat list: Right-click on a chat and select Archive Chat (above "Clear Chat").
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle on Archive Chat.
What Happens When You Archive a Chat?
When a chat is archived:
- It is removed from your main chat list and moved to the Archived Chats section.
- It is automatically muted — you won't receive message notifications (but you'll still be notified if you're @mentioned).
- Stick to Top setting is automatically toggled off
- It is removed from all your Chat Labels, except "Later".
- It remains searchable — you can always find it through search.
- The change syncs across all your devices automatically.
Note: For 1-1 chats, calls are not muted when you archive a chat.
How to View Your Archived Chats
When you have at least one archived chat, an "Archived Chats" entry will appear at the top of your main chat list (just below your Chat Labels). Tap or click on it to enter the Archived Chats section.
Mention Indicators for Archived Chats
Afraid of missing out on important mentions when a chat is archived? Worry not, as a prominent indicator will be shown to you whenever someone mentions you in a chat you archived.
- @You mentions are prioritised over @All mentions: If you receive both mention types from archived chats, only @You mention indicator will be shown.
Inside Archived Chats:
- Chats are sorted by most recent activity, just like your main chat list.
- You can tap into any chat to read messages and reply as usual.
- If you've been @mentioned in an archived chat, a mention indicator (@ symbol) will appear on the Archived Chats entry to alert you.
To exit the Archived Chats section and return to your main chat list:
- iOS: Tap the back arrow (top left), or swipe right from the left edge of the screen.
- Android: Tap the back arrow (top left), or press the back button on your device.
- Desktop: Click the back arrow (top left).
How to Unarchive a Chat
You can move a chat back to your main chat list at any time.
On iOS:
- From Archived Chats: Swipe left on the chat and tap Unarchive.
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle off Archive Chat.
On Android:
- From Archived Chats: Long-press on the chat and tap Unarchive Chat.
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle off Archive Chat.
On Desktop:
- From Archived Chats: Right-click on the chat and select Unarchive Chat.
- From inside the chat: Go to Chatroom Settings and toggle off Archive Chat.
When a chat is unarchived, it returns to your main chat list. Note that it will remain muted and won't be re-added to any custom Chat Labels automatically — you can adjust those settings yourself after unarchiving.
Things to Know
- Version availability: This feature is only available from v3.67 onwards.
- No archiving limit: You can archive as many chats as you like.
- Custom Chat Labels: Archived chats cannot be added to custom Chat Labels. If a chat you previously labelled gets archived, it will be removed from that label.
- "Later" messages: Any messages you've marked for "Later" from an archived chat will still appear in your Later label and work as normal.
- Notifications: You won't receive notifications for archived chats unless you are directly @mentioned.
- If you leave or are removed from a group that you had archived, the chat will automatically be unarchived. It will remain unarchived if you rejoin the group in the future.
- No internet connection: Archiving or unarchiving requires an internet connection. If you're offline, the action won't go through and you'll see a "No internet connection" message.
- Invalid chats: You will not be able to archive invalid chats. A chat is considered invalid under a few circumstances, such as:
- 1-1 Chats - When the other party is no longer your contact
- Group Chats - When the group chat is disbanded, or you have been removed from it
